Campden Tablets (100 pack)
Purpose Prevents oxidation and bacterial contamination in wine, cider and beer production. Provides long-term stability to finished brews.
Active Ingredient Sodium or potassium metabisulphite (0.44g per tablet)
Applications
Sanitisation Kills bacteria and inhibits wild yeast growth without affecting flavour. Particularly effective against acetobacter, which causes vinegar spoilage in untreated cider.
Dechlorination Removes chlorine and chloramine from municipal water supplies. One tablet treats 20 gallons (75L) of water.
Anti-oxidant Traps oxygen during transfers between containers, protecting wine from oxidative damage.
Dosage
- Wine/cider/beer: 1 crushed tablet per gallon (3.8L) of must or wort
- Contributes 67 ppm sulphur dioxide
- Active SO₂ levels diminish as the product reacts with chlorine, chloramine and aldehydes
Usage Notes Cultured brewing yeasts are resistant to Campden tablets. Cannot halt fermentation on its own—requires potassium sorbate to prevent yeast repopulation when controlling residual sweetness.
Equivalency Eight tablets equal approximately half a teaspoon (2.5mL) of sodium metabisulphite.
